What color should my lips be?

A

"As you can see I love wearing red!"

Well if they are really blue and you haven’t applied anything to them, you may have been holding your breathe way too long waiting for my answer. Just exhale and relax now and let me help you solve this seemingly simple question... Lipstick is kind of like clothing, we wear different colors and shades and it changes with the seasons. Of course, lipstick looks much better when it is properly matched to the skin tone of the person wearing it. There is also the consideration of shaping your lips using various light and dark shades to enhance your look. So, if you are blessed with very thin lips and would like to make them appear fuller you can accomplish this with shaping! I will touch briefly on this subject in this post, so read on.

MATCHING LIPSTICK COLOR TO SKIN TONE

FAIR COMPLEXION: If you have fair skin, then take a look at the cooler tones such as pink, beige, or tawny which fall closer to the blue spectrum. These always seem to work better for fair skin.

MEDIUM COMPLEXION: This includes olive colored skin and if you are in this category you will be looking for lipstick that falls into the warmer spectrum providing undertones of yellow, brown, or orange. Warmer tones always seem to work better for darker complexions.

DARK COMPLEXION: Choose metallic hues such as copper and bronze or bright berry tones to enhance the cheeks eyes, and lips. Always make sure to select the correct foundation such a warm chocolate base, followed by a good hydrating concealer.

THE SHAPE OF YOUR LIPS

By using different shades, colors, and application techniques we can all enhance the way our lips look and even hide a few things that we may not like about our lips. After all lips are meant for kissing, so let’s get comfortable with the way they look!

THIN LIPS: If your lips are too thin, just give them a little more curve. First apply a foundation matching your skin tone and which hides the existing lip line. Now take your lip liner and create a new fuller outline, but don’t overdo it. Follow up with a matte color and stay away from a clear gloss which will actually make your lips look even thinner.

UNEVEN LIPS: If your lips are uneven, meaning they don’t match--the top or bottom lip may be thinker or thinner on one side, then here is a tip; Grab your tip pencil and outline a new edge on the weak side (thinner side) to make both sides match better. Slightly smudge the line to blend it and smooth any rough edges. Now just apply the proper color.

LIPS TOO SMALL: Follow this tip and you will have that pouty Hollywood celebrity look in no time. Pick a lip liner that is the same color as the skin tone of your lips and then use the same liner to fill in. Use a brush to apply a nice shimmery clear gloss which will add the illusion of depth and fullness as it reflects light. DO NOT pick a liner that is the same color as your lipstick—Girls…you know lipstick wears off after a nice evening out, but the mismatched liner remains and you will surely end up in somebody’s Facebook gallery with a nice dark circle around what was supposed to be a pretty smile!

LIPS TOO BIG: Use a foundation color which blends and hides your existing lip line and then use your lip pencil to create a new smaller lip line to your liking. When drawing the new line do not go all the way to the corners of your mouth—stop just shy of the corner for a better result. You can finish off with a clear or shimmer gloss to add fullness or use a matte shade to have the thinner look.

Well, I hope this information helps you! In a future post maybe we will talk about how to change your looks depending on the time of day it is or where you are going? Let me know what you think…Emily
